This curious baby moose surprised me where the Moose River enters Long Pond, just minutes after paddling for a bit with a family of river otters.
Expect the unexpected, whether it’s a parade of loons or a tranquil frog in a Chase Rapids eddy.
Birds abound, on land and water. A goldeneye with young, yellow-bellied sapsucker on a cluster of well-drilled birch, and a yellowlegs, all photographed in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.
I’m looking to purchase a Wenonah Fusion in Royalex, and I’m curious if you could let me know if this boat is good for lakes up to 600 acres? Rivers? Is the rudder worth the $? I really appreciate your comments. Thank you!

Hi. For me (5′ 6″ and 125 lbs) this boat was good even on Lake Champlain and did well in rivers, where I paddled Class I and II rapids and portaged around anything more difficult. My boat does not have a rudder, so I can’t speak to that. It survived lots of abuse being tracked upstream in shallow, rocky rivers, with lots of scratches but no damage. I did have skid plates installed fore and aft at the time the boat was manufactured. And I paddled with a kayak paddle. Happy boat shopping!
